The world’s favorite puzzle cube is coming up on a significant milestone this year. As of July 26th, 2015, the Rubik’s cube is reaching the thirty-fifth anniversary of its international launch.
Today, the 3D printing world has added all sorts of twists and turns to this classic innovation, giving us larger, more complex, and even triangular versions of the Rubik’s cube. One of the bigger cube artists is a man by the name of Evgeniy Grigoriev; boasting both a YouTube channel full of fascinating designs and four best-selling cubes featured on designyourcube.com, he is a strong contender for one of the biggest names in Rubik-dom. One of his biggest contributions to the field, however, is also his very smallest.
Grigoriev currently holds the Guinness World Record for the smallest Rubik’s cube ever made. He accomplished this with the help of a 3D printer, which rendered the classic cube design in Frosted (Ultra) Detail Plastic with the MultiJet Modeling 3D printing process. At a scant 5.7 mm, “The One Cube” is one thousandth the volume of the original, and it is both fully functional and available for purchase.
