3D printing technology has already shown some potential in creating large-scale structures, like small buildings, bridges, and even artificial reefs. These projects have been largely experimental works, lacking in the sense of style and artistry that 3D printing has come to be known for. This is all about to change, though, as builders gear up to print out the world’s first 3D printed luxury home.
This home is to be built across five acres in upstate New York. In addition to a 2,400 square foot house, there will be a garage, a swimming pool, and a jacuzzi. To build these structures, the oversized printer known as the D-Shape shall be taking materials out of the local environment and binding them together with a magnesium-based structural “ink”; the end result is something that is efficient, environmentally friendly, and strong enough to stand by itself without the need for iron reinforcement.
In creating this home, the builders hope to usher in a new era of not only greater architectural possibilities, but humanitarian possibilities as well. This technology promises to make affordable, functional homes more available to low-income households and improve the life quality of people around the globe.
