3D Printing Saves a Baby’s Skull

February 17, 2014

Our Seattle 3D printing company is encouraged by how the medical world has taken to 3D printing in a big way. Recently, its application in surgery has been demonstrated most impressively as a doctor team made use of a 3D printer to cure a baby of Plagiocephaly.

Plagiocephaly, or “flat head syndrome”, describes when one of the skull’s growth plates prematurely fuses. This gives the forehead a flat appearance and causes the skull to grow asymmetrically. When presented with such a case, two doctors from Stony Brook University turned to a 3D printer to create a model of what the child’s skull ought to look like. With the help of this practical model as a guide, they were able to perform the operation more quickly and with a better chance of success. We look forward to seeing more success in 3D printing being used to cure diseases in the future.
