The process of investment casting was invented by the ancient Chinese. Through the use of beeswax, they would craft a temporary model of a product that was to be manufactured. This model was then coated in a series of layers that would be durable enough to withstand the heat of molten metal or whatever else was to be used to create the finished product. This done, the wax model is then melted away to produce a viable mold.
Traditional investment casting practices could be costly and time consuming, but 3D printing company Voxeljet promises to fix all of this. By printing a model out of a synthetic wax substance, a lot of the work can be taken out of the process. This allows prototyping and manufacturing to be done quickly and more efficiently, which could be a great boon across many sciences and industries.
