3D Printed Facial Implants Earn FDA Approval

February 25, 2016

3D printing technology is making more and more headway in the field of medicine. The FDA has been approving many applications of additive manufacturing for medical uses, including 3D printed medication, custom-printed dentures, and spinal implants. Most recently, they gave their approval to cranial and facial implants that are helping people to live normal lives after suffering debilitating, disfiguring injuries..

These implants come in the form of titanium plate implants designed to repair repair damage to the face. Medical professionals can custom-build an implant to fit a patient’s face through the use of CT and MRI scans, printing them out in lightweight, biocompatible titanium, and then affixing them permanently to the skull with self-tapping screws.

BioArchitects, which was the first company to receive clearance to create such implants, said “We are extremely proud to contribute to what we consider another major advance in the trend toward personalized medicine.”
