Harnessing 3D Printing to Benefit the Visually Impaired

March 14, 2016

It’s no mystery at this point that 3D printing has helped many disadvantaged people live a normal life. From printed prosthetics limbs to printed bone implants to printed practical surgery guides, thousands of people have already found their salvation from this revolutionary technology. Now, 3D printers are working to help those who struggle with blindness or impaired vision.

Historically, 3D objects have helped blind people to experience what most of us experience in two dimensions. Braille writing is an excellent example of this, wherein raised bumps allow the blind to read specially translated text. However, there is still a world of art and media that the blind have had to miss out on; this is what 3D printing artists are trying to amend.

Did you ever wish you could share your favorite pictures with a blind friend? Some printers have managed to create 3D models of 2D images, allowing the visually impaired to feel what they could not see. Perhaps they might turn a painting into a raised relief, or even create a small figurine out of an illustration. Even old family photographs are being turned into keepsakes that can be appreciated by the members of the family who cannot see.
