3D printing has already shown many applications in the field of renewable materials, sustainable energy, and other green practices, but Print Green is taking the concept of green additive manufacturing an impressive step further. Through the use of a special printer and an innovative, organic “ink”, this group is printing out living artwork.
Project Print Green was conceived by intermedia arts students at the University of Maribor in Slovenia as an effort to bring art, technology, and nature together. With the help of their mentor, Professor Dušan Zidar, this group of students created an “ink” made from soil, water, and grass seeds. The printer, an adapted CNC machine, puts down layer upon layer of this material just like a normal 3D printer, and the final product sprouts grass to create a living, vibrant work of art. Through the use of this technology, the group is transcending the common green wisdom of “think before you print” and embracing the slogan “print, because it’s green”.
