The Fuzz about 3D Printing in Seattle

July 28, 2016

What’s 3D Printing?

3D printing is not a craze, its inception goes way back into the 1980’s. The technology’s phenomenal growth is worldwide and the US leads the way. Washington is all agog about 3D printing with Seattle having more than 200 companies, and is still growing.

The biggest reason for companies pursuing this technology is for prototyping – the creating of a sample or model to determine if the object can be replicated, learned from, and be useful.

3D printing is a technology that makes a solid three-dimensional object from a digital file. The process is correctly referred to as additive manufacturing , where the software slices the design into thin sheets of material and builds up the object from the bottom up, adding or printing one layer on top the last until the object is complete. Plastics are the most widely used material but many other materials, such as ceramics, steel, glass, and many others have become ‘printable’.
